The start of the war
On september 1, 1939, Germany had made an invasion on Poland. A few days later, Britain and France declared war on Germany, in which the war had begun. The Germans decided to use a new type of warfare called blitzkrieg. This new type of warfare was too strong for the Polish army to stand up against, so on September 27th the Polish capitol, Warsaw, fell to the Germans, and by October 5, 1939, the polish army had been defeated. After World War I, the French built a line of concrete bunkers called the Maginot Line along the German border. The Germans ended up avoiding the Maginot Line and made their way through the Ardennes Mountains. The French did not think large numbers of tanks would be able to move through the mountains and left only few troops to guard that part of the border. The Germans smashed through the French lines with no struggle at all and quickly trapped the Allied forces in Belgium.
